Storm women tripped up by Buena Vista in IIAC opener

STORM LAKE, Iowa – Jasmyn Flynn-Graves had 16 points and 10 rebounds as Buena Vista beat the Simpson women's basketball team 74-62 in Wednesday's Iowa Conference opener.

Becca Pennington had a game-high 18 points and four 3-pointers for the Beavers (7-5, 1-0), who used a big second quarter to snap Simpson's three-game winning streak.

Noreen Morrow had 15 points and seven rebounds for the Storm (7-5, 0-1), who lost a conference opener for just the third time in the last 19 seasons. Maddie Bosworth had 11 points, five rebounds and five assists, and Mackenzie Haupt added 10 points and five boards.

The lead changed hands eight times in the first 12 minutes before Pennington hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 8:05 left in the second quarter. Her 3 made it 18-17, sparking an 11-0 run as Buena Vista led the rest of the way.

Buena Vista outscored Simpson 20-13 in the second quarter and led 33-27 at halftime.

Simpson pulled within three points in the third quarter on a Morrow jumper, but Buena Vista scored seven straight late in the period to extend the lead to 13, putting the game out of reach.

Up next: Simpson goes to Coe on Saturday, Jan. 9. The Kohawks (9-3, 0-1) lost to Loras 72-61 on Tuesday.
