Storm fall to 11th-ranked Washington-St. Louis

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Amanda Martinez scored 25 points for No. 11 Washington-St. Louis and cold shooting in the second half plagued the Simpson women's basketball team in a 74-49 setback in the championship game of the 2015 McWilliams Classic on Saturday.

Lily Sarros added 13 points and Zoe Vernon had 12 on 4 3-pointers for the Bears (6-1), who won their fifth game in a row.

Katie Ahrenholtz came off the bench to score a team-high 13 points for the Storm (4-4), who managed just 26.3 percent shooting from the field in the second half.

Morgan Mauro hit three 3s in the first half to keep Simpson within striking distance. The Storm trailed just 38-33 at the break after shooting 56.5 percent from the field.

WashU went on an 8-2 run to open the third quarter, going up 46-35 on a Sarros layup with 7:17 to play in the period. The Bears went on to outscore the Storm 19-6 in the deciding frame, extending the lead to as much as 27 in the fourth quarter.

Ahrenholtz and Maddie Bosworth represented Simpson on the all-tournament team.
