SHEBOYGAN, Wis. – Maddie Bosworth scored 13 points and the Simpson women's basketball team nearly erased a 19-point deficit, but ran out of time in a 60-57 loss to Nebraska Wesleyan in the season opener Friday night.
Bosworth's lay-in with 51 seconds left made it 60-57 but Mackenzie Haupt misfired on the potential game-tying 3 with 4 seconds left as Nebraska Wesleyan advanced to the championship game of the Lakeland Tip-Off Tournament.
The Storm (0-1) will play host Lakeland in the consolation game at 1 p.m. The Muskies (0-1) lost to Carthage (1-0) in the first game of the day.
Simpson trailed by 15 going into the fourth quarter, but outscored the Prairie Wolves (1-0) 24-12 in the final frame.
Sophomore Norreen Morrow scored nine points and brought down seven rebounds in her first career start. Bosworth went 5-for-7 from the field, Morgan Mauro came off the bench to score 11 and Haupt added 10.
Courtney Cook had 20 points and 13 rebounds for the Prairie Wolves, who built a 33-21 halftime lead on the strength of 6-for-8 shooting from beyond the 3-point arc.
