Simpson cruises to 77-53 win over Buena Vista

STORM LAKE, Iowa – Whitney Van Wyk had 11 points and eight rebounds as the Simpson women's basketball team cruised to a 77-53 win over Buena Vista on Saturday afternoon.

MacKenzie Haupt scored 11 points and Maddie Bosworth came off the bench to add 10 for the Storm (16-7, 6-6 Iowa Conference), who secured a berth in the Iowa Conference Tournament with the win. Simpson led by as many as 31 in the rout.

The Storm currently sit in fifth place in the league standings, two games behind their final two opponents - Coe (8-4) and Loras (8-4). Five of the tournament's six teams have been determined.

Shelby Wiederhoeft had 11 points and six rebounds for the Beavers (8-15, 3-9), who saw their conference tournament hopes suffer a major blow. With two games remaining, Buena Vista is two games behind Wartburg in the battle for the sixth and final spot.

Simpson took control of the game early, answering Wiederhoeft's game-opening 3 with a 28-8 run over the next 12 minutes. Van Wyk hit two 3s during the run, scoring all 11 of her points in the first half.

None of Simpson's starters played more than seven minutes in the second half, allowing the reserves to get valuable minutes.
