Big first half helps Storm cruise past Central 70-46

INDIANOLA, Iowa – Rachel Kaale led three players in double figures as the Simpson women's basketball team used a dominant first half to cruise to a 70-46 win over Central on Wednesday night at Cowles Fieldhouse.

Kaale scored a game-high 16 points, MacKenzie Haupt had 14 points and five steals and Britney Boland added 10 and six rebounds for the Storm (14-4, 4-3 Iowa Conference), who shot nearly 59 percent from the field in building a 34-point lead by halftime.

Savanna Thornton came off the bench to hit four 3s and score 12 points for the Dutch (9-9, 0-7), who lost their seventh in a row after starting the season 9-2.

Simpson controlled the game from the outset, making its first six shots from the field while opening up a 15-2 lead in just over 3 minutes.

Central regrouped and trimmed the lead to 19-9 with a pair of free throws by Bry Pierece at the 12:13 mark. The success was short-lived, however, as Simpson all but put the game away by outscoring Central 30-6 over the final 10:22, taking a 49-15 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Kaale had 13 points and Boland 10 in the first half alone, as the Storm had little problem getting to the paint against Central's 2-3 zone defense. Simpson went 20 of 34 from the field in the half and scored 28 points off 18 turnovers.
