Haupt scores 18, Storm hold off Wartburg 77-70

WAVERLY, Iowa – Britney Boland beat the shot clock with a deep jumper in the final seconds, making it a two-possession game and helping the Simpson women's basketball team to a 77-70 win over Wartburg on Saturday afternoon.

MacKenzie Haupt scored 18 points, Brittany Hedrick had 13 and Boland finished with 11 for the Storm (12-3, 2-2 Iowa Conference), who avenged a first round loss to Wartburg in last season's conference tournament.

Bobbi Burrows came off the bench to score 20 points for the Knights (10-5, 1-3), who lost for the fourth time in five games. Kailey Kladivo had 15 points and Kristie Sommer added 12.

Simpson led 71-68 with 30 seconds left but had to inbound under its own hoop with just 1 second showing on the shot clock. Hedrick found Boland just inside the top of the key and she knocked down the clutch jumper to give Simpson a five-point cushion.

The play was made possible thanks to an offensive rebound by Whitney Van Wyk, one of three second-chance opportunities in the final minutes for the Storm. Simpson led 64-63 before scoring five straight points, all off offensive boards.

Haupt converted a three-point play after a miss by Boland to make it 67-63 with 3:28 left and Hedrick knocked down a deep two off a long rebound to make it 69-63 with 3:12 left.

Simpson led for most of the second half before a pair of free throws by Burrows gave Wartburg a 60-58 lead with 5:59 to play. Haupt's layup with 5:20 to play gave Simpson a 61-60 lead and the Storm wouldn't trail again.
