Simpson drops road contest to Loras, 65-53

DUBUQUE, Iowa – Britney Boland scored 15 points for the Simpson women's basketball team but Carly Goede and Loras pulled away for a 65-53 win Wednesday night.

Loras mounted an 11-0 run early in the second half to take the lead for good. Goede made five 3s and Therese McMahon added 14 points for the defending league champion Duhawks (8-6, 2-1 Iowa Conference).

McMahon led a Loras bench that outscored Simpson's 28-12.

Whitney Van Wyk scored eight points, and Rachel Kaale and MacKenzie Haupt added seven apiece for Simpson. The Storm (11-3, 1-2) have lost 2 of 3 after starting the season 10-1.

Simpson built a six-point lead early in the first half but Loras hit five 3s in the final six minutes to take a 31-26 lead into the half. Boland knocked down a pair of free throws to give Simpson a 35-34 lead with 16:47 to play, its first lead since midway through the first half.

Loras responded with an 11-0 run, resulting in a 45-35 lead with 12:57 to play. The run included a pair of triples by Goede.

Simpson didn't go away, though, as a three-point play by Maddie Bosworth sparked an 8-0 run. Bosworth's free throw pulled the Storm within 45-43 with 11:15 left, but a five-minute drought from the field allowed Loras to hold on.
