Storm hold off Grand View for 84-83 win

DES MOINES, Iowa - MacKenzie Haupt scored 17 points and Maddie Muhlenbruck made the go-ahead layup with 1 second left as the Simpson women's basketball team held off a furious rally by Grand View in an 84-83 win on Wednesday.

Britney Boland scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds and Muhlenbruck added 13 points off the bench as the Storm (7-1) won their sixth straight.

Britny Halleland scored 16 points and went 4-for-7 from beyond the arch for the Vikings (4-5). Maddie Westergard finished with 14 points and eight rebounds.

Simpson led by 17 with 4:29 to play when Grand View came roaring back. Heather Greer knocked down a 3 to start a 22-5 run and  the Vikings made six 3s over the next 4 minutes. Emily Bell hit the final 3 in the run, tying the game 80-all with 3 seconds left.

Muhlenbruck scored the go-ahead layup on the next possession and added a pair of free throws to put it away.

Simpson won despite shooting a season-low 54.1 percent from the free throw line, going 20-for-37.

Simpson led 60-55 at the 7:09 mark in the second half before going on a 12-0 run to extend the lead to 17. Haupt scored seven points during the stretch, which included a 3 by Boland.

Up Next: The Storm are off until its trip to the Cruzin' Classic in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. on Dec. 17-18. Simpson will face Goucher on Dec. 17 and St. Thomas (Fla.) on Dec. 18.
