Trio of Rasmusson, Stolte, Allen lead sweep of Dubuque

DUBUQUE, Iowa — Madison Rasmusson had five hits in game one, Annie Stolte and Ashley Allen drove in five runs apiece on the day and the Simpson softball team had its best offensive game of the season in sweeping Dubuque 11-3 and 8-5 on Saturday.

Allen homered in game one and Maggie Long held Dubuque to just six hits in a complete-game win as the Storm (8-26, 3-11 Iowa Conference) extended their winning streak three games after beating Loras in game two of Tuesday's doubleheader.

After losing the first 11 games of the conference season, Simpson pounded out a season-high 18 hits in the opener. Rasmusson finished 5-for-5 in the game, the second-most hits in school history and most since Holly Stevens set the school record with six in 1995. Her four runs scored are also the second-most in school history.

Game 1
Allen hit a three-run homer as part of a four-run fourth inning, giving the Storm a 7-0 lead. She finished with two hits, Kaleigh Snyder had three and Rasmusson finished 5-for-5 with an RBI single. Annie Stolte went 2-for-4 with a two-RBI triple in the seventh and Taylor Davis added two RBIs on a pair of singles.

Long (2-14) held the Spartans (20-23, 1-9) in check, surrendering just two earned runs in the complete-game win. She fanned two and walked one, allowing six hits.

Game 2
Stolte broke a 3-3 tie with a bases-clearing double in the sixth inning and Simpson went on to plate five runs in the frame for an 8-3 lead. Stolte finished 2-for-3 while Allen and Jordan Williamson each drove in runs in the sixth.

Rasmusson (5-10) went the distance for her fifth win of the season, giving up five earned off 10 hits with one walk. She had a triple and two RBIs at the plate. Allen and Williamson finished with two hits apiece as Simpson extended its winning streak to three games.

Dubuque got two runs back in the bottom of the sixth but Gabby Marchese was thrown out at third to end the inning after trying to stretch a double into a triple. Kayla Reusche started the relay in right field, second baseman Madi Bennett provided the cutoff and Davis applied the tag. Rasmusson retired the side in order in the seventh to close it out.
