Storm drop doubleheader to 12th-ranked Coe

INDIANOLA, Iowa — Runs were hard to come by Saturday as the Simpson softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader against No. 12 Coe, losing 5-0 in game one and 3-0 in the nightcap.

Game 1
Maliah Fligg tossed a complete-game seven-hitter and the Coe offense scored four runs in the seventh inning to pull away in what began as a pitcher's duel. Fligg helped her own case with two hits and Mallory McArtor tripled in a run in the big seventh.

Maggie Long held her own against Coe's bats, keeping the Kohawks off the board for the first five innings. Jordan Williamson went 2-for-3, getting a single to help Simpson load the bases in the sixth. Brianna Chaplin singled as well, but a fielder's choice and a groundout ended the threat.

Game 2
Haley Jones hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning and Alyssa Olson struck out 11 to help Coe earn the sweep. Jones, Fligg, Taylor Huber and Maddy Ryan each had two hits apiece.

Rasmusson pitched well, allowing three runs off nine hits while striking out two without a walk in 5 1/3 innings. Simpson managed just three hits, getting singles from Rasmusson, Chaplin and Taylor Davis.
