DUBUQUE, Iowa - Tori Haag became Simpson's career hits leader, Rachel Guessford hit two home runs in game two and the Simpson softball team swept Loras on Saturday, winning game one 11-3 in six innings before holding on for an 8-7 win in game two.
Natalie Meuler turned a double play to end a tense seventh inning in game two as the Storm (27-6, 6-2 Iowa Conference) extended their winning streak to six games and moved into a tie for second place in the league standings.
The Storm led 8-1 at one point in the nightcap and were up by four runs going into the seventh. The Duhawks (12-16, 0-6) scored three runs in the seventh before Lauren Fritz grounded into a 4-3 double play. With the tying run at first, Meueler fielded the ground ball, tagged out Megan Larson and went to first for the Storm's only double play of the game.
Haag set the Simpson record for hits in a career when she singled up the middle in the second inning of game two, number 181 of her career. The senior catcher now owns three career records: doubles, times hit by pitch and hits.
Guessford homered in the third and fifth innings, increasing her conference-leading total to 10 on the year. Her second home run - a solo shot - gave Simpson a 5-1 lead. Simpson added three more runs in the sixth for a seven-run lead.
Riley Fisher earned her 12th win of the season, allowing four runs - all earned - off nine hits in six innings. She gave up just one run through the first five innings before allowing three in the sixth. Abbie VanVleet finished the game out, tossing the final inning.
Game one provided more breathing room as VanVleet, Guessford, Arianna Kim and Brianna Chaplin all drove in two runs. Chaplin hit a two-run homer in the second and VanVleet added a two-run shot of her own in the fifth.
Simpson scored five runs in the second and added three in the sixth to help get to the run-rule. VanVleet improved to 13-2 in the circle, allowing just three hits and one earned run in 5 1/3 innings before Kaytlyn Ernst recorded the final two outs.
