Storm split tight contests at Superior Dome

MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Simpson softball team split four games decided by six total runs on the second day of the Finlandia Dome Tournament at the Superior Dome.

Simpson lost to Alverno 1-0 to start the day, beat Edgewood 5-3, lost to Marian (Wis.) 8-6 on a walk-off homer and ended the day with a 4-3 win against Lakeland.

Grace Hall went 5-for-12 at the plate and Riley Fisher earned a win and a save to lead the Storm (3-2). Fisher and Brianna Chaplin drove in three runs apiece on the day.

Alverno 1, Simpson 0
Simpson managed just three hits and Samantha Chapnick's solo home run in the seventh stood up as the game-winner. Starter Kaytlyn Ernst fanned 10 in the tough-luck loss.

Simpson 5, Edgewood 3
Fisher had two hits and an RBI and picked up a five-out save. Rachel Guessford drove in the go-ahead run on a single in the sixth and Abbie VanVleet earned the win, fanning six without a walk in 5 1/3 innings.

Marian (Wis.) 8, Simpson 6
Taylor Gerlach hit a walk-off, three-run home run to lead the Sabers to the comeback win. Fisher and Brianna Chaplin each drove in two runs in a five-run second as the Storm jumped out to a 5-0 lead. Simpson managed just two hits in the final five innings, one of which was a solo shot by Chaplin that gave the Storm a 6-1 lead in the fifth.

Simpson 4, Lakeland 3
Hall drove in the game-winning run on a single in the fifth and Fisher struck out 11 in the complete-game win. Taylor Davis went 2-for-3 and Haag drove in two on a single in the third as Simpson jumped out to a 3-1 lead.
