Long balls lift Storm over Buena Vista

STORM LAKE, Iowa - Rachel Guessford hit a two-run home run as part of a 7-run fourth in game one, Chelsea Winegard hit a two-run shot in game two and the Simpson softball team swept Buena Vista 7-3 and 6-0 on Tuesday.

Kacee Arey (19-8) got back to her winning ways, going the distance in game one and teamming with Katlyn Ernst for the shutout in the nightcap for the Storm (25-9, 4-6 Iowa Conference).

Simpson trailed 2-0 in the opener before the offense opened up and the Buena Vista defense broke down in the deciding fourth inning.

The Beavers (11-17, 2-8) committed three errors resulting in five unearned runs in the frame. Guessford entered the game as a pinch-hitter and delivered with her third long ball of the year. Of her four hits on the season, three have cleared the fence.

The second inning proved to be the difference in the nightcap. After Kylie Van Houten drove in a run in the first inning, Winegard - the second batter of the inning - went yard for the third time this season.

Hailey Jensen also doubled in a run as Simpson took a commanding 5-0 lead after two.

The Storm have a chance to shake-up the conference standings when they travel to 9th-ranked Luther (20-5, 7-1) for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 20. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
