Marquette, Mich. – A bus accident on Friday morning slowed the Simpson softball team's annual trip to the Superior Dome Tournament, but nothing slowed the team down on Saturday.
The bus carrying Simpson's softball team collided with a semi that jack-knifed in front of it while heading East on Interstate 80 near Newton, Iowa, grabbing the attention of local and national media outlets. Fortunately - aside from a few bumps and bruises – no injuries were reported. The team boarded a different bus and completed the trip to Marquette, Mich.
Simpson showed no ill-effects on day one of the tournament, going 4-0 with wins over UW-Oshkosh, Concordia-Wis., UW-River Falls and UW-La Crosse. In the first three games, Simpson hit .455 as a team, led by a 6-for-8 performance by freshman Ashley Prettyman. Kylie Van Houten and Prettyman hit two home runs apiece as Simpson accounted for six on the day.

Simpson 11, UW-Oshkosh 0 (5 innings)
Van Houten hit a grand slam in the first inning and a solo shot in the fourth as the Storm cruised. Hailey Jensen homered, Prettyman doubled and homered and Kacee Arey tossed the shutout.
Simpson 7, Concordia-Wis. 6
Jessica Toyne tripled to lead off the seventh and Hillary Harmon hit a walk-off single as the Storm held on for the narrow win despite out-hitting Concordia 11-4. Harmon hit a two-run bomb in the fifth as Simpson built a 6-0 lead. But Alyssa Robison hit a grand slam as part of a five-run sixth that got the Falcons back in the game. Katlyn Ernst went 5-plus innings in the win.
Simpson 5, UW-River Falls 4
Prettyman drove in the go-ahead run on a two-RBI double in the sixth and scored the game-winning run on a double by Van Houten as the Storm came back for the win. River Falls led 3-2 before Simpson scored three in the sixth. Arey went 6 1/3 in the win and Kinsey Van Houten recorded two outs in the seventh for the save.
Simpson closes the tournament with two games on Sunday, facing Carroll (Wis.) at 7 a.m. EST and Edgewood at 8:45 a.m. Live video can be viewed here.
