Potratz ties HR record, Simpson sweeps

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Tieryn Potratz tied the program record for home runs in a career and Simpson swept its first day of play at the 2011 Rebel Spring Games, beating Mount Union 8-0 in six innings before handling Beloit 15-0 in five innings.

Potratz, a sophomore from Fort Dodge, Iowa, tied the record when she hit two home runs in the first inning against Beloit. As a freshman, she tied the Simpson mark for most home runs in a season with eight, and appears poised to re-set that record with five already this season.

Potratz finished the day with four hits, going 3-for-4 with five RBIs against Beloit.

Simpson 8, Mount Union 0 (6 inn.)
Kacee Arey and Bryn Johnson combined for a six-inning shutout against the Purple Raiders (5-3). Arey (3-0) struck out four in the win, throwing 5 1/3 innings before Johnson retired the final two batters.

The Storm (5-3) scored five runs in the first two innings, capitalizing on four Mount Union errors. Veronica Roshek and Kiersten Ruff had two hits each and Allie Hock drove in two with a single in the second.

In all, Simpson scored six unearned runs. Rachel McAninch took the loss for Mount Union.

Simpson 15, Beloit 0 (5 inn.)
Jessica Toyne and Allison Barloon combined to hold Beloit (2-6) to two hits and Simpson cruised after scoring eight runs in the first inning.

Toyne (2-2) got the win, allowing one hit in three innings. Barloon gave up one hit as well, striking out two in two innings of work.

Potratz hit two homers and doubled, accounting for half of Simpson's six extra-base hits. Keri Sorensen and Carissa Coopman drove in two runs apiece and Coopman, Kylie Van Houten and Leslie Downing each had two hits.

Potratz led the game off with a shot to left-center, then hit a three-run bomb over the centerfield fence in her second at bat of the inning.

Simpson continues play tomorrow when it faces Kean and Muskingum. The Kean game begins at 2 p.m. with Muskingum at 4.
