Simpson sweeps Cornell, runs winning streak to 11

INDIANOLA, Iowa - Kelsey Castenson (Harcourt, Iowa/Southeast Webster) and Tieryn Potratz (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge) homered, Whitney Oviatt (Carnation, Wash./Cedarcrest) earned two wins in the circle and Simpson remained undefeated in Iowa Conference play with a doubleheader sweep of Cornell Saturday at Mt. Vernon Softball Complex.

The Storm (17-6, 6-0 IIAC) needed only six innings to run-rule Cornell in game one 10-2 before blanking the Rams (13-8-1, 1-3) 7-0 in the night cap. Simpson's winning streak now stands at 11 games.

Oviatt ran her record to 12-4 on the season, allowing only four hits and two runs in 11 innings. Bryn Johnson (Laurens, Iowa/Laurens) added two innings in the circle, giving up a hit and a run. Castensen and Potratz both tallied three hits and drove in three runs.

Potratz got Simpson on the board in game one, hitting a three-run homer with two outs in the second inning. Simpson added four runs in the fourth, with two coming thanks to a single off the bat of Kelsey Host.

In game two, the Storm capitalized on four Cornell errors to score five unearned runs. Castenson drove in a run on a groundout in the fifth and smacked a two-run homer in the seventh. Oviatt and Johnson combined to one-hit the Rams in the game, with Oviatt logging six innings.
