Simpson goes 3-3 at Finlandia Dome Tournament

MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Simpson softball team opened the 2010 season at the Finlandia Dome Tournament over the weekend, going 3-3.

The Storm (3-3) opened the tournament Saturday, Feb. 27 at the Superior Dome. Simpson fell to Wisconsin-La Crosse, 3-7, before defeating Finlandia 11-1 in the second game. The sixth-ranked team in the preseason National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) poll, Gustavus Adolphus beat Simpson 9-2 in the night cap.

Simpson flipped the script on day two of the tournament, going 2-1 with a 2-1 win against Wisconsin-Oshkosh and a 12-8 win against Marian. Wisconsin-Stevens Point knocked off Simpson in the final game of the day, 3-1.

Senior Kortney Proctor (Wilton, Iowa/Wilton) drove in seven runs on the weekend with a home run and a double. Keri Sorensen (Bettendorf, Iowa/Pleasant Valley) hit .438 with a team-high seven hits. Carissa Coopman (Davenport, Iowa/North), Jessica Toyne (Bellevue, Neb./East), Allie Hock (Lawrence, Kan./Free State), Tieryn Potratz (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge) and Jessica Barkley (Mitchellville, Iowa/SE Polk) all homered for the Storm.

Simpson accumulated six home runs on the weekend. As a team, the Storm hit 15 in all of 2009.

In the circle, Whitney Oviatt (Carnation, Wash./Cedarcrest) went 1-1 in three appearances, striking out 19 while allowing nine earned runs. She pitched a complete-game two-hitter in Simpson's 2-1 win over UW-Oshkosh, striking out nine without surrendering a walk. Freshman Kacee Arey (Lucas, Iowa/SE Warren) went 1-0 in two appearances and Bryn Johnson (Laurens, Iowa/Laurens-Marathon) went 1-1. Toyne tossed five innings in two games, allwing only two hits.
