Kalinay qualifies in 100 as Storm compete at last-chance meets

Dylan Kalinay ran the second-fastest 100-meter dash time in school history to qualify for nationals and the 4x100-meter relay set a school record to highlight Simpson's last-chance meet performances on Wednesday and Thursday.

Kalinay won the 100 meters at the Augustana Twilight on Thursday in Rock Island, Ill., finishing in 10.62 seconds. The time is the fastest by a Simpson runner since 1984 and stands at 15th in Division III, good enough to qualify for the national meet next week in LaCrosse, Wis.

Kalinay will also compete in the 110-meter hurdles at nationals and Jordan Coughenour will compete in the 400-meter hurdles. Kalinay is ranked sixth nationally in the 110 hurdles and Coughenour is seventh in the 400 hurdles.

Although they didn't qualify for nationals, the quartet of Travis Tupper, Kalinay, Kirk Wicks and Chase Wetterling reset the school record in the 4x100-meter relay, running 41.66 to break the mark of 41.68 set just last season.

The 4x400-meter relay team of Wetterling, Tupper, Wicks and Coughenour ran a season-best time of 3:15.88, good for 19th in the country and just three spots out of contention for nationals.

The distance duo of Trey Thompson and Ian McKenzie competed at the North Central Gregory Final Qualifier on Wednesday in Naperville, Ill. They ran the 5,000 meters with Thompson taking 15th in a season-best time of 15:07.15 and McKenzie placing 21st in 15:21.06.
