Kalinay punches ticket to nationals with two big runs

WAVERLY, Iowa -- Dylan Kalinay needed a big day to secure a spot at nationals in the 60-meter hurdles. But he didn't have a big day. He had a huge day and qualified in the 60-meter dash as well.

Kalinay broke his own school record in the 60-meter hurdles, winning the event in 8.11 seconds. His previous best was 8.17 set at the Wartburg Select on Feb. 3. He ran a personal-best 6.90 in the 60-meter dash, currently the second-fastest time in school history.

With all qualifying meets complete, Kalinay is set to qualify for nationals in both events. He is ranked sixth in the hurdles and 12th in the 60.

Simpson's 4x400-meter relay was on-pace to post a top-five time nationally but Emmitt Wheatley re-aggravated a hamstring injury on the home stretch of the third leg. Chase Wetterling and Travis Tupper ran 49.08 and 49.38, respectively, and the Storm led Augustana and Loras when Wheatley went down.

Augustana went on to win the event in 3:17.42, the second-fastest time in the country, and Loras finished in 3:18.01, the fourth-fastest time in the country.

This year's NCAA Division III Indoor Championships will be contested March 9-10 at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala. The final list of meet participants will be available via the NCAA website (NCAA.org) by Monday at 9 a.m. Eastern time.
