4x200 defends title on first day of IIAC Championships

PELLA, Iowa -- The 4x200-meter relay team won a conference title for the third year in a row and the distance medley relay brought home a runner-up finish to lead the Simpson men's track and field team on the first day of the 2018 Iowa Conference Indoor Championships.

The 4x200 team of Dylan Kalinay, Travis Tupper, Emmitt Wheatley and Chase Wetterling set a facility record, running 1:30.57 to beat Wartburg by more than a second. The same combination of runners won last year's title and three of the four -- Kalinay, Tupper and Wheatley -- won the title in 2016.

Tyler Combs, Jordan Coughenour, Levi Lefebure and Kyle Hovey ran the distance medley relay to a second-place finish, the best finish in school history after back-to-back third-place finishes. The quartet's time of 10:27.83 is the third-fastest in school history.

Individually, Kalinay posted the top qualifying time in the 60 hurdles and the No. 2 time in the 60 meters. The defending hurdle champ, Kalinay ran 8.21 in the hurdles and 6.98 in the 60. Sam Adeniyi qualified for finals in the 60 hurdles, posting the No. 5 time in 8.45.
