Storm men dominate, win season-opening Central Invitational

PELLA, Iowa — The Simpson men's track and field team won six events and captured the team title at the outdoor season-opening Central Invitational on Saturday, posting four top-10 NCAA marks on the way.

Simpson scored 173.5 points, dominating the nine-team field and beating William Penn by more than 40 points.

Dylan Kalinay won the 200 meters and the 110 hurdles, Chase Wetterling won the 400 meters, Emmitt Wheatley won the 100 meters, Ian McKenzie won the 5k and the 4x400 relay continued its dominance with a season-opening win. 

The Storm also got second-place efforts from Kirk Wicks (400), Jordan Coughenour (400 hurdles), Trey Thompson (5k) and the 4x100 relay. 

Kalinay ran 14.69 in the 110 hurdles, the No. 4 mark in Division III. The 4x400 of Wetterling, Travis Tupper, Coughenour and Wicks ran 3:18.53, the No. 7 mark in Division III. Coughenour added the seventh-best 400 hurdle time in the country, crossing in a personal-best time of 54.41. Wetterling's personal-best 49.08 in the 400 stands at No. 10 in Division III.
