Big efforts by Yaeger, McCloskey pace Storm at Jim Duncan
DES MOINES, Iowa – Nick Yaeger ran the fastest steeplechase by a Simpson athlete in 28 years and Briana McCloskey turned in one of the fastest 5,000 meter performances in school history, as the Simpson track and field team made big strides at the Jim Duncan Invitational this weekend.
No team scores were kept at the invitational, hosted by Drake. A strong Division I contingent took part in the meet, including Iowa, Iowa State, Drake, Northern Iowa, South Dakota, North Dakota and Nebraska-Omaha.
Yaeger took fourth in the steeplechase, breaking the tape in 9:32.00, the second-fastest time in school history and quickest since Paul Beatty set the school record of 9:11.20 in 1987. Yaeger finished second among Division III participants, behind runners from South Dakota, Northwest Missouri State and Central.
McCloskey ran the 5,000-meters in 18:39.86, placing 14th overall. Her time is the fifth-fastest in school history and the best effort by a Storm runner since 2006.
Dylan Kalinay had a strong showing in the sprints, highlighted by a second-place effort in the 110-meter hurdles. He finished in 15.24 seconds, adding a 13th-place effort in the 100 (11.28) and 18th in the 200 (23.00).
On the women's side, Bayley Fleshner added a sixth-place effort in the 100-meter hurdles (15.53).
