Fighting Bees sting Storm in opener

DAVENPORT, Iowa -- The Simpson College men's tennis team opened its season on the road at St. Ambrose, but fell 5-4 to the Fighting Bees on Saturday.

The duo of senior Peter Walkwitz and junior Ethan Humble scored the first point for the Storm (0-1) in the No. 2 doubles slot. The pair won 6-3 as St. Ambrose (2-1) won the other two.

Walkwitz and Humble both won their singles matches and played to three sets. Walkwitz won 6-3 and dropped the second, 4-6, before sweeping the third set to win at No. 2 singles. For Humble, he dropped the opener after playing in a tiebreaker and went on to win 6-3, 6-2 for the triumph at No. 4.

Freshman Adam Velazquez started his career with a victory at No. 5 singles. He lost just five games while earning set scores of 6-2 and 6-3.

Up Next
The Storm will compete in the American Rivers Conference Individual Tournament on Sept. 24-25. Action will take place at Luther College in Decorah.
