Men's tennis picks up first win of Price era

GALESBURG, Ill. — The Simpson men's tennis team opened the spring season with a split on Saturday, giving first-year head coach Matt Price his first career win in the process.

Zach Nelson and Brett Dewerff each went 2-0 in singles play on the day to lead the Storm (1-3), who lost to Aurora 7-2 to start the day before beating Knox 7-2. 

Nelson and Dewerff had Simpson's only wins against Aurora. Nelson posted a 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 10-4 win over Robert Salerno at No. 2 singles and Dewerff beat Tom Asavarachan in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5. 

Simpson won 5 of 6 singles matches and 2 of 3 doubles matches for a convincing win against Knox.

Adam Wieser's three-set win over Minh Le at No. 1 singles was the only tightly contest match. Nelson, Geoff Converse, Dewerff and Aaron Smith all won in straight sets.

The doubles team of Wieser and Converse beat Knox's duo of Le and Ganesh Uppalapu 8-7 (7-2) at the No. 1 spot while Dewerff and Karson Richardson edged Swarup Ryuusaki and Mahmood Ali Khan 8-7 (7-5) at No. 3.
