Men's tennis beats Southwestern, matches last year's win total

WINFIELD, Kan. - The Simpson men's tennis team completed its trip to the Sunflower State with a 5-4 win over Southwestern College on Monday, helping the team equal last year's win total in just 11 matches.

The Storm (5-6) won the top three singles matches and took No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to edge Southwestern (4-3).

In singles action, Zach Kusick earned a 6-0, 6-0 win over Jordan Tompkins at No. 1. The next two wins weren't as easy, as Alex Hook came back for a 1-6, 6-4, 10-6 win over Max Manley at No. 2 and Peter Reitgraf held on for a 6-3, 1-6, 11-9 win over Michael Bond at No. 3.

Reitgraf picked up his season-leading eighth win with the result.

In doubles, Kusick and Reitgraf beat Manley and Tompkins 8-3 at No. 1 and Hook teammed up with Mike Rundle to oust Hollace Dillon and Javier Sianuqui 8-3 at No. 3.

Simpson begins conference play Saturday, March 29 when it goes to Cedar Rapids to face Coe at Noon. The team will then make the short trip to Mt. Vernon for a 4 p.m. match against former-IIAC foe, Cornell.
