Simpson turns in record-setting performance at Liberal Arts Championships

PRINCIPIA, Ill. – The Simpson College swimming and diving team continues to make strides, and for the second year in a row, the team shined on the biggest stage.

Under first-year head coach Tom Caccia, the Storm set a combined 17 school records at the three-day, Liberal Arts Championships hosted by Principia College. The women placed eighth of 12 teams while the men took ninth of 10.

Of the standout performances at the meet, the most notable came from Christina Amburgy. The sophomore set school records in both the 100 and 200-yard freestyle and helped the 400 freestyle relay team establish a new mark as well.

Amburgy broke her own record in the 200 (2:01.60) and broke a 10-year old mark in the 100 (55.32). The 400 freestyle relay team of Amburgy, Haley Blum, Marissa Stepleton and Malia Meyer broke the record set all the way back in 2001.

Amburgy placed third in the 200 freestyle, the best effort by a Simpson swimmer at the Liberal Arts Championship since Dana Kuiken won the 100 breaststroke and took second in the 50 freestyle in 2004. She also took sixth in the 100 free.

The men's side also featured a number of breakout performances, including all-conference efforts by Kyle McKim and Dylan Gray in the 100 breaststroke. McKim set a school record with a 1:00.72 in the finals to place fourth, the best individual showing by Simpson men's swimmer at the Liberal Arts Championships. Gray was right behind McKim, finishing in 1:00.96 to place fifth.

McKim added an eighth place effort in the 200 breaststroke (2:15.44).
