Storm tame Prairie Wolves in supercharged affair

INDIANOLA, Iowa - The Simpson College men's soccer team got two goals from Zach Kline and Sam Hying less than a minute apart, holding on to defeat Nebraska Wesleyan by a score of 2-1.

While the first half was not ripe for action, the second half was anything but, with three goals and six cards occurring in the latter period. The Storm (6-7, 3-1 A-R-C) were looking to get back to winning ways against the Prairie Wolves (7-3-3, 1-3-1 A-R-C) after last year's matchup led to a draw in controversial circumstances.

GOAL SUMMARY

  • The Storm got on the board first in the 57th minute. Ronaldo Ordaz played a pass out wide to Kline, who took it in stride and finished from a tight angle. Kline's shot hit the post and crossed over the line to give the Storm a 1-0 lead.
  • Not less than a minute later, the Storm won a kick just inside the halfway line. Hying lofted a high and deep ball that the Prairie Wolves keeper missed due to pressure from Ordaz, allowing the ball to bounce past into the net.
  • The Prairie Wolves got one back 10 minutes from time, after a brilliant chipped pass landed at the feet of Owen Glogowski, who rounded Simpson goalkeeper Arya Nowroozi for an easy finish.

OTHER KEY MOMENTS

  • Just moments before Simpson opened the scoring, the Prairie Wolves hit the post after a brilliantly struck shot from 30 yards out from Alex Kohler.
  • Nowroozi made a huge save in the second half, after the Storm could not initially clear the ball. A Nebraska Wesleyan player unleashed a one-time half-volley rocket that was goalbound, but Nowroozi dove at full stretch to his right to punch it away.
  • The Storm nearly wrapped it up when it was 2-0, but Andrew Russell's off-balanced shot agonizingly went over the crossbar.

NOTABLE

  • The Storm lead the all-time series, 15-8-4.
  • The Storm are unbeaten against the Prairie Wolves since 2015, winning six of those seven meetings.
  • Simpson has scored multiple goals in the matchup in every meeting since 2014.
  • While Ordaz's streak of scoring in every home match came to an end, he kept alive his streak of at least one point after his assist to Kline.
  • Hying netted his first career goal in the win.
