Storm open flood gates in 8-0 win over Coe

INDIANOLA, Iowa -- Spencer Young and Seth Bowman scored two goals apiece and the Simpson men's soccer team ended its regular season schedule on a high note with a dominant 8-0 win over Coe on Tuesday night at Buxton Stadium.

Fourth-seeded Simpson will host fifth-seeded Central in the first round of the American Rivers Conference Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 27. Start time is yet to be determined.

The Storm close the regular season 11-5-2 overall and 5-2-1 in the American Rivers Conference, tied for third in the league standings with Wartburg. The Knights held the tiebreaker over Simpson for the third-seed. The Kohawks close the season 0-14-1 overall and 0-8 in the league.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Justin Gilmour helped the Storm fire out of the gates early, scoring his seventh goal of the season just seven minutes into the game off a cross from Darius Doswell.

Freshman forward Spencer Young didn't waste any time getting into the action, scoring his first goal of the night only three minutes after subbing into the game off a cross from Edward Idehen in the 29th minute. Young and Idehen proved to be deadly, as the duo teamed up again in the 37th minute for Young's second goal.

Simpson extended its lead to four early in the second half off Baraka Ellie's fifth goal of the season with help from Tanner Alderson. Enrique Idehen followed Ellie's goal up by scoring a header off a cross from Bowman.

Following his assist up in the 74th minute, Bowman found himself in the perfect position to take advantage of an empty net and put the Storm up 6-0. Matt Turnley later found Bowman for his second goal on a long through ball that isolated Bowman with Coe goalkeeper, Alec Balta, who wasn't able to make the save.

SImpson's lone senior, Jack Arndt was given the opportunity to re-enter the game late in the second half. A central piece to Simpson's back line over the past three seasons, Arndt got a chance to play up top. He had several opportunities before converting for his second goal of the season off an assist by Jake Dotterer.

GAME NOTES

  • Simpson's eight goals were a season-high and the most for the Storm since beating Buena Vista 8-1 in 2014.
  • Jake Potratz recorded his sixth shutout on the year, tying him for the conference lead.
  • Simpson controlled the shot count on the night, outshooting the Kohawks 34-3.
