Men’s soccer shuts out Dubuque, remains perfect in A-R-C

INDIANOLA, Iowa -- The Simpson men's soccer team got a pair of second-half goals to beat Dubuque 2-0 on a rainy, cold Saturday evening at Buxton Stadium.

Simpson rebounded from a disappointing loss to Waldorf earlier in the week to earn three key points in the American Rivers Conference standings, remaining tied atop the leaderboard. Simpson is tied with Luther and Loras as the only undefeated teams in the league.

The Storm improve to 7-3-1 overall and 2-0 in the American Rivers. The Spartans are now 2-6-1 overall and 0-2 in league play.

How it Happened

Dubuque struggled to get its offense to consistently put pressure deep into Simpson's backline, as the Storm defenders kept the ball out of their third of the field for the majority of the game.

Jake Potratz returned from an injury to anchor the Storm's defense, helping register the team's sixth clean sheet of the season. Dubuque managed just four shots on goal, all of which were saved by Potratz.

Baraka Ellie found himself in the right place at the right time when he received a cross from Ian Dean in the 63rd minute. Wit the keeper off his line, Ellie scored on an empty net. Ellie has now scored a goal or dished out an assist in three out of the last four games.

Justin Gilmour added an insurance tally in the 76th minute, navigating through traffic to go far post from the near left wing.
