Pochop's golden goal leads Storm to comeback win at Carleton

NORTHFIELD, Min. — Garrett Pochop scored the golden goal eight minutes into the first overtime period and the Simpson men's soccer team came back for a 2-1 win over Carleton on Saturday.

Pochop scored both goals for the Storm (3-0), who remained unbeaten on the young season. Carleton got on the board in the seventh minute but Jake Potratz kept a clean net the rest of the way.

The previously unbeaten Knights (4-1) got on the board early when Stephen Baisch collected a free kick for a 1-0 lead, ending Potratz's streak at 157-plus minutes without allowing a goal. Both teams remained quiet for the remainder of the half, each with only three shots apiece.

Pochop took advantage of a long ball from Justin Gilmour in the 67th minute to tie the game at 1-1 on a low-angled shot that deflected off the far post and into the net. The teams battled for the go-ahead goal before regulation expired, but no one was able to find the back of the net.

The Storm went into overtime for the first time and remained unbeaten on the young season after Pochop scored his second goal of the night off a header in the 98th minute. Junior Jack Arndt was credited with the game-winning assist.

• Pochop now has 35 career goals and needs just eight to become the program's career leader. Mitchell White holds the record with 42 goals from 2011-14.

• Simpson improves to 9-8-8 in extra time under seventh-year head coach Rick Isaacson. The Storm went just 3-6-6 from 2012-15 but are 3-2-1 in extra time over the last two seasons.
