Late goals lift No. 17 Luther over Simpson

INDIANOLA, Iowa — A defensive battle through 60 minutes turned into a hat trick for Rafael Broseghini as 17th-ranked Luther beat Simpson 3-0 on Saturday.

Broseghini -- a reserve who came into the game without a goal -- scored three times in a 26-minute span for the Norse (7-1-2, 2-0-0 Iowa Conference), who beat Simpson for the sixth time in seven tries. His first score came off a deflection in the box in the 62nd minute before adding goals in the 81st and 88th minutes, producing a deceiving final tally.

"The game played out as I expected," head coach Rick Isaacson said. "Luther held possession for 60-65 percent of the match. We were looking to counter attack and catch them in transition. We created enough chances to win, but unfortunately Luther was the more opportunistic side."

Looking to stay atop the Iowa Conference standings, the Storm (6-4-1, 1-1-0) couldn't capitalize on some quality looks, putting eight of their 10 shots on goal. Conference goals-scored leader Garrett Pochop put three shots on goal but couldn't get past Will Blain, who made eight saves in the shutout.

"The final score probably isn't an accurate indication of how tight the game actually was," Isaacson said. "We'll learn from a few things that were exposed today and we'll work to get better."
