Men’s soccer wins overtime thriller in Minnesota

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. - The Simpson men's soccer team scored the golden goal seven minutes into overtime, beating Saint John's (Minn.) 1-0 on Tuesday.

The game-winning goal officially went down as an own goal, but Darius Doswell played a big part in it. 

Collin Hemann started the final possession of the game on a corner kick, lifting a high serve to the far post. Doswell was there to receive it, sending the ball dangerously close to the end line. After a loose ball, a Johnnie defender sent the ball into the back of the net in an attempt to clear. 

"Getting a positive result on the road against a quality opponent is certainly a big win," head coach Rick Isaacson said. "They have a nice team, filled with experienced players that I think will help Saint John's compete for a MIAC title. This was a big road win for our boys."

The Johnnies (1-3-3) took 29 shots -- 16 more than Simpson -- and kept goalkeeper Chris Harris busy, putting eight shots on goal. Harris had his best game of the season, making seven saves in the shutout.

"Soccer can be a cruel sport at times, and that was a game that neither team deserved to lose," Isaacson said. "Our guys worked their tails off for the result and I'm proud of the heart they continue to display."

The Storm (5-2-1) won their second game in a row despite going without a goal from one of the country's top scorers, Garrett Pochop. Pochop took three shots, putting one on goal. He saw a streak of four straight games with a goal come to a close.
