WAVERLY, Iowa – Marcus Varnum's first-half goal held up as the game-winner as the Simpson men's soccer team beat Wartburg 1-0 on Saturday.
Varnum took an assist from Garrett Pochop in the 27th minute and the Storm (8-8-2, 3-2-1 Iowa Conference) held on for their third-straight win.
Simpson's first win over Wartburg since 2012 ensured a spot in the Iowa Conference Tournament and moved Simpson into fourth-place in the league standings with one game left. Last-place Buena Vista comes to Simpson for the season finale Tuesday, Oct. 27. A win would ensure Simpson a No. 4 seed in the IIAC Tournament, which would mean a home game in the first round.
Ayo Adebayo and Paris Martins took three shots each for the Knights (10-6-1, 3-3), who dropped into fifth in the league standings.
Austin Schafer improved to 4-2 in goal, making six saves in the shutout win.
