INDIANOLA, Iowa - The third goal of Josh Arvidson's hat trick came on a header in overtime as Elmhurst handed the Simpson men's soccer team a heartbreaking 3-2 loss Monday.
Arvidson took a cross from Keegan Thompson to score the golden goal, dealing the Storm (4-7-1) a fourth-straight loss. Of those losses, three have come in the final 65 seconds or overtime.
Simpson trailed 2-1 in the second half before a red card forced Elmhurst to play a man down. Less than two minutes later, Darius Doswell headed in a corner kick from Tyler Neumann to tie the game in the 82nd min.
Neumann assisted on both Simpson goals, moving him into a tie for first on Simpson's all-time list with 21. His first came when he played a through ball to Cody Jacobson, who lofted a shot over the head of the keeper to give Simpson a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute.
Arvidson tied the game on a header in the 35th minute and scored the go-ahead goal in the 61st, helping the Bluejays (4-6-1) to their third win in a row.
Simpson suffered the loss despite controlling the game from start-to-finish, out-shooting Elmhurst 19-11, taking 13 corners to Elmhurst's five and placing three more shots on goal. The Storm have been outshot just three times this season.
