Men's soccer falls in final seconds

INDIANOLA, Iowa – Gonzalo Hernandez scored a breakaway goal off a counter attack with just over a minute to play and Dubuque handed the Simpson men's soccer team a heartbreaking 2-1 loss Saturday.

Despite generating a number of quality chances throughout the game, the Storm (4-6-1, 0-2-0 Iowa Conference) didn't get their first goal until the 86th minute when Tyler Neumann used a fortuitous bounce to tie the game 1-1. Neumann rocketed a shot that ricocheted off teammate Louis Joslyn and into the net.

With Simpson pushing forward on the attack, the Spartans (7-2-1, 2-0-0) countered and got the ball to Hernandez. He raced down the field and scored the game-winner with 1:05 left in regulation.

The game remained scoreless until Skylar Showalter scored on a breakaway in the 76th minute.

Simpson outshot Dubuque 14-12 and put seven shots on goal to Dubuque's six.
