Missed opportunities cost Storm against Saint John's

INDIANOLA, Iowa - Daniel Bruckbauer broke a 1-1 tie in the 76th minute and Saint John's (MN) sweated out a 2-1 win over the Simpson men's soccer team Sunday afternoon.

Simpson outshot Saint John's 12-3 in the second half but failed to capitalize on four near-misses, which included one shot off the post and one off the crossbar. The Johnnies (3-1-1) took advantage of their opportunities, putting four of eight shots on goal.

Down 1-0 after an evenly played first half, Marcus Varnum came up with the equalizer just 44 seconds into the second half. The Storm (3-1-1) controlled the pace the rest of the game, but couldn't hit the back of the net despite coming painfully close a handful of times.

Just seven minutes after tying the game, Varnum had a chance to give Simpson the lead but his look at the far post went inches wide.

Less than a minute after Bruckbauer broke the tie on a breakaway goal, Josh Harry pounded an attempt off the crossbar. In the 82nd minute, Garrett Pochop went off the right goalpost and then misfired on the rebound as well.

Simpson outshot Saint John's 17-8 for the game and held a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.
