Men's soccer comes up short against St. John's

INDIANOLA, Iowa - Simpson had some quality chances in the second half but couldn't capitalize in a 1-0 loss to St. John's on Sunday evening.

Zane Heinselman scored the lone goal of the contest early in the second half and the Johnnies (2-0) held on down the stretch against Simpson.

The Storm (1-1) controlled play for most of the second half, outshooting St. John's 7-3 in the final 45 minutes.

Mitchell White had an opportunity off a set piece when Marcus Varnum found him streaking toward the goal. White's attempt at a one-timer went high, however.

Tyler Neumann produced another quality chance on a run down the right side. He created some separation from the defender but couldn't turn the corner as his shot went wide.

Heinselman's goal came off a coner kick that ricocheted off the far post. He collected the rebound and broke the scoreless tie.

Game Notes: With the result, St. John's took a 3-2-2- advantage in the all-time series ... the two teams were playing for the first time sinc 2006, a 3-1 win for the Johnnies ... White remains two goals shy of tying Simpson's career record, holding steady at 34 ... Simpson returns to action Wednesday when Nebraska Wesleyan comes to Buxton Stadium for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
