CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Simpson men's soccer team scored two early goals and held on for a 2-0 win over Coe on Saturday.

Marcus Varnum scored the first goal of the game at the 6:40 mark off a rebound and Mitchell White added an insurance goal in the 19th minute for the Storm (6-4, 1-0 Iowa Conference).

"We're happy to be 1-0 in the league," head coach Rick Isaacson said. "Starting the conference schedule with a win puts us exactly where we want to be at this point in the season."

Luke Aronow made three saves in the shutout, his second of the season.

Simpson took as many shots as Coe (11), but put six shots on goal to Coe's three.

"We are still a work in progress, but I'm pleased with our growth to this point," Isaacson said. "If we continue to develop at this rate, we'll be playing our best soccer 3-4 weeks from now when it matters most."

Eric Hoar made four saves for the Kohawks (3-6, 0-1).

Simpson has a short turnaround before hosting Augustana (Ill.) on Sunday at 3 p.m.
