Storm run out of time in 3-2 loss to Wartburg

WAVERLY, Iowa - The Simpson men's soccer team scored two goals in the final 20 minutes but came up short in a 3-2 loss to Wartburg on Saturday.

Jeremy Reinert and Mitchell White scored late goals for the Storm (6-7-1, 3-1 Iowa Conference), but a 3-0 deficit was too much to overcome.

"I was again proud of our collective effort and our never-quit attitude," head coach Rick Isaacson said. "We were crawling back into the game and captured the momentum but we just ran out of time."

Austin Otto scored the first two goals of the game for the Knights (6-5, 2-1). He scored his first goal in the 52nd minute and his second came less than six minutes later.

"We played well except for a 10-15 minute stretch in the second half," Isaacson said.

Kyle Sprain connected on his first goal of the season in the 69th minute, giving Wartburg what seemed to be a comfortable lead.

But Reinert made things interesting with a goal in the 71st minute. White's came in the 83rd.

Wartburg outshot Simpson 26-14. Luke Aronow notched his third 10-save game of the season and Cade Shatzer made four saves for Wartburg.

Simpson hosts Buena Vista on Wednesday, Oct. 12 in a 5 p.m. kickoff from Buxton Stadium.
