Simpson finishes 2nd in rain-shortened tournament

INDIANOLA, Iowa – Zach Hale carded a 1-over 73 to tie for fifth and the Simpson men's golf team placed second of 12 teams at the Wartburg Spring Invitational on Saturday.

Originally scheduled to be a two-round tournament, it was shortened to one due to impending thunderstorms the following day.

The Storm shot 300 on the day, just two strokes behind Wartburg (298) and one ahead of Kirkwood (301) and Wartburg Orange (301). Simpson finished ahead of four conference foes: Luther (306) took fifth, Loras (311) seventh, Buena Vista (314) eighth and Coe (328) ninth.

Hale was one of three Simpson golfers at-or-below 75 on the day. The senior played par golf for most of the round, turning in two birdies and three bogies.

His 73 was tied for the second-lowest of the Division III competitors, as Glenn Walls (UNI) won the round with a 4-under 68, Jordan Azbell (Kirkwood) placed second with a 71 and Ryan Argotsinger (UNI) and Ryan Heide (St. Olaf) each shot even par.

Shaan Desai and Andy Hutchins each fired a 75 to tie for 13th, as both golfers turned in a pair of birdies.

Conner Juilfs tied for 29th (77), Trent Lindenman tied for 33rd (78) and Nathan Molstead tied for 44th (81).

Simpson will play in its own Spring Invitational on Tuesday, April 16.
