Stumbo’s career game not enough against Nebraska Wesleyan

LINCOLN, Neb. — Tyler Stumbo scored 33 points in his first start but the Simpson men's basketball team couldn't fully recover from a slow start, losing to Nebraska Wesleyan 94-85 on Saturday.

Deion Wells-Ross scored 21 points and handed out seven assists for the Prairie Wolves (5-0, 1-0 Iowa Conference), who built a 14-point lead in the first half. Nate Bahe scored 13 of his 15 points in the first half and Jack Hiller added 16 on 4-for-6 shooting from beyond the arc.

A Stumbo jumper pulled Simpson within one at 84-83 with 1:38 left, but Hiller answered with a jumper. Simpson went 0-for-2 on its next trip before Hiller provided the dagger with a 3 from left wing with 46 seconds left.

Simpson pulled within a point three times in the second half but couldn't pull even or take the lead.

Making his first start of the season, Stumbo went 10-for-17 from the field and 13-for-15 from the free throw line to go along with eight rebounds. He led Simpson's comeback effort, scoring 23 points in the second half.

Sam Amsbaugh scored 16 points and Taylor Filbert and Ben Rajewski had 12 apiece for the Storm (2-5, 0-2).
