Turner scores 19, Storm hold off Gustavus 90-78

INDIANOLA, Iowa — Austin Turner scored a career-high 19 points to lead four players in double figures as the Simpson men's basketball team beat Gustavus Adolphus 90-78 on Saturday.

Sam Amsbaugh scored 16 points, Ryan Skaar 14 and Sabonis Smith added 12 for the Storm (3-1), who beat Gustavus for the first time in five tries. Skaar went 4-for-7 from 3-point range as Simpson made 10 on the day, its average in all three wins. 

Simpson built a 14-point lead in the second half before an 8-0 run cut the lead to six midway through the frame. Ben Rajewski responded with a 3 from the left wing, the first of two big shots for the sophomore down the stretch. His second came with 7 minutes to play, giving the Storm a 79-67 after Gustavus cut the lead to nine. 

Peter Kruize had 27 points and 11 rebounds for the Gusties (0-2), who have lost both of their games to Iowa Conference foes. They lost to Buena Vista 81-60 in the season opener.

Turner went 6-for-9 from the field and 7-for-10 from the free throw line, getting to the hoop on the Gusties all afternoon. He handed out four assists and committed just one turnover.
