Waldorf’s big second half hands Storm first loss

INDIANOLA, Iowa — June Prowell scored 17 of his game-high 24 points in the second half, Leland March converted the go-ahead three-point play and Waldorf came back from 13 down to beat the Simpson men's basketball team 67-59 on Monday.

Sam Amsbaugh had 13 points and 12 rebounds and Sabonis Smith led the way with 14 points for the Storm (2-1), who suffered their first loss of the season. It was a tale of two halves for the Storm, who led by 11 at halftime but shot just 23 percent from the field in the second frame.

Simpson led by 10 early in the second half but Waldorf responded with an 11-0 run, taking a 38-37 lead on a Prowell layup. Simpson went ahead 44-42 on a corner 3 from Jamie Montgomery but Prowell hit a pull-up jumper to tie it. Waldorf went ahead for good on March's three-point play with 8:28 to play.

March scored 18 points and Prowell added nine rebounds for the Warriors (3-5), who snapped a two-game losing streak to beat the Storm for the second straight season. After shooting just 8-for-23 in the first half, Waldorf couldn't miss in the second, shooting better than 61 percent from the field while going 5-for-10 from 3-point range.

Waldorf stretched its lead to eight before Smith hit a 3, a pair of free throws and another 3 to make it 57-54. Prowell responded on the next possession with a 3 of his own early in the shot clock and Simpson didn't have another answer.

After playing just four minutes in the first half, 7-foot-3 Gabriel Munoz logged 18 in the second, changing the offensive game plan for the Storm. Simpson outscored the Warriors 22-10 in the paint in the first half but managed just eight points underneath in the second. Munoz finished with seven points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots.
