Gretzky named IIAC Athlete of the Week

INDIANOLA, Iowa - Dillon Gretzky led the Simpson men's basketball team to a perfect 3-0 week, scoring the game-winner in the final seconds against Wittenberg en-route to earning Iowa Conference Player of the Week and Male Athlete of the Week honors for the period ending Sunday, Nov. 29.

A senior guard from Grinnell, Iowa, Gretzky averaged 20.7 points, 6.3 rebounds and shot 58.8 percent from the field to lead the Storm to wins over Grinnell, Rhodes and Wittenberg.

His top performance of the week came Sunday in the championship game of the Rhodes Thanksgiving Tournament. With 3.3 seconds left and the game tied, Gretzky made an acrobatic layup off an inbounds play with 0.4 seconds on the clock, giving Simpson a 69-67 win over previously unbeaten Wittenberg in the championship game.

Gretzky finished with 27 points and eight boards against Wittenberg. He had 20 points and seven rebounds in Tuesday's 103-80 win over Grinnell and went for 15 and four in a 58-48 win over Rhodes on Saturday.

The accolade is the first of Gretzky's career and the first for a Simpson player since Charles Swain on Dec. 22, 2014.
