Simpson tripped up by Wartburg 74-67

INDIANOLA, Iowa – Charles Swain scored a season-high 25 points, but Nate Woeste made the go-ahead jumper with 2:15 left and Wartburg hit six free throws down the stretch to beat the Simpson men's basketball team 74-67 on Saturday at Cowles Fieldhouse.

Dillon Gretzky had 11 points and Austin Turner added 10 and four assists for the Storm (6-13, 1-7 Iowa Conference).

Woeste had 16 points, Nick Webber had 18 and Clay Cook finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Knights (11-8, 4-4).

Turner made the go-ahead 3 from the top of the key to give Simpson a 63-62 lead with 4:05 left in the game. DJ Dafney got a steal on the next possession and finished a wild layup in traffic to put Simpson up 65-62 at the 3:41 mark.

Jordan Cannon hit a tough jumper in the paint to get Wartburg within one and Woeste put the Knights up 66-65 on his jumper in the corner. Wartburg pulled down two straight offensive rebounds on the next possession before Simpson was forced to foul. Dan Van Gronigen hit both free throws as Wartburg went 6-for-6 down the stretch.

The glass was a problem spot for the Storm as they were outrebounded 43-26.

Simpson goes to Luther on Wednesday, Feb. 4. The Norse (6-13, 2-6) lost to Coe 67-60 on Saturday. Luther won the first matchup, 62-56 in Indianola.
