FB PREVIEW: Simpson at Dubuque

The Simpson football team opens Iowa Conference play Saturday when it travels to Dubuque, Iowa to take on the defending IIAC champion Dubuque Spartans at 1 p.m. from Chalmers Field. The game will air on KNIA 1320 AM/95.3 FM and online at KNIAKRLS.com.

The Storm (1-1) earned their first win under first-year head coach Matt Jeter last week with a 25-23 triumph at Illinois College. The Spartans (2-0) and their high-flying offense are undefeated after a 28-24 win over Pacific in Oregon last week.

Simpson and Dubuque meet for the 67th time Saturday in a series dating back to 1950. Simpson leads the all-time series 34-29-3, but has lost the last two. Dubuque came back for a 31-24 win in Indianola a year ago and won 44-10 in 2014. The Spartans have won 6 of 7 in the series.

>>>Simpson kicks off the Iowa Conference schedule against the defending league champions and 2015 NCAA Playoff participant, Dubuque. The Spartans went 8-3 in 2015, running the table in the Iowa Conference.

>>>Dubuque boasts the No. 2 passing attack in the nation, averaging 449 yards through the air through two games. Junior QB Connor Feckley runs the show, leading the nation with 898 passing yards and 11 TDs through two games. Senior Najee Toomer has been Feckley's favorite target. The 5-10 receiver leads Division III in receiving yards (434) and TDs (7).

>>>Junior running back Jordan Beem saw his streak of eight-straight games with at least 100 yards rushing come to an end last week when he ran for 89 in Simpson's 25-23 win over Illinois College. Though his streak of consecutive 100-yard rushing games came to a close, he can continue another streak today. Beem has rushed for at least 100 yards in seven straight IIAC games and can make it eight Saturday against Dubuque.

>>>The Storm have utilized two quarterbacks through two games so far in 2016, with Caleb Frye going the distance in week one and Sam Sasso getting the call last week. The more mobile of the two, Frye went 23 of 46 for 258 yards, three TDs and 2 INTs in a week one loss to Wis.-Stout. Sasso entered the game in the third series last week, going 11-for-30 for 154 yards and one TD. The week three starter had not been announced at press time.

>>>Senior linebacker Cole Cook and junior placekicker Drew Jensen earned IIAC Player of the Week honors after last week's win over Illinois College. The IIAC Defensive Player of the Week, Cook made a career-high 17 tackles and comes into the game tied for 16th in Division III with 13.5 tackles per game. Jensen set a school record with four made field goals, including the go-ahead 28-yarder with 1:10 left in the fourth quarter. The two-time IIAC Special Teams Player of the Week is tied for third in Division III with 2.5 field goals per game.
