Five football players named to NFF Hampshire Honor Society

IRVING, Texas - Simpson senior football players David Adams, Russ Fairfield, Dillan Hamilton, Ryan Olson and Cole Wigert earned membership to the 2014 National Football Foundation Hamprshire Honor Soceity, as announced by the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF) in April.

The membership is comprised of college football players from all divisions of play who each maintained a cumulative 3.2 GPA or better throughout their college career. A total of 838 players from 267 schools qualified for membership in the society's eighth year, setting a new record for the number of members in the history of the program, which began in 2007.

"We continue to raise the bar each year for the number of student-athletes who qualify for membership in the Hampshire Honor Society," said NFF President & CEO Steve Hatchell. "The Hampshire Honor Society plays an important role in highlighting that college football players clearly play a leadership role in the classroom as well as on the playing field. We congratulate each of these young men for their commitment to excellence."

Adams is a defensive tackle from Bermuda Dunes, Calif. double majoring in political science and integrated marketing and minoring in sports administration. He started eight games for the Storm in 2013, recording 2.5 sacks and 7.0 tackles for loss. His 30 tackles were third among the team's defensive lineman.

Fairfield is a safety from Atlantic, Iowa double majoring in exercise science and sports administration and minoring in coaching. He started all 10 games for the Storm in 2013,  tying for the team lead with two interceptions to go along with 33 tackles. At season's end he earned a spot on the 2014 Iowa Conference All-Academic Team.

Hamilton is a linebacker from Walnut, Iowa majoring in accounting. He started all 10 games for the Storm in 2013, finishing second on the team with 66 tackles. He made 3.5 tackles for loss and had two pass breakups.

Olson is a wide receiver from Elkhart, Iowa majoring in sports administration and double minoring in coaching and management. He appeared in all 10 games for the Storm in 2013, making 31 catches for 327 yards and two touchdowns. He finished third on the team in receptions and receiving yards.

Wigert is a cornerback from Boone, Iowa majoring in economics and minoring in mathematics. He started all 10 games for the Storm in 2013, breaking up a team-best six pass attempts. His 41 tackles were the second-most among Simpson defensive backs. He also had one interception, one forced fumble and one tackle for loss.

Qualifications for membership in the NFF Hampshire Honor Society include:

  • Being a starter or a significant contributor in one's last year of eligibility (or a senior who has declared for the NFL Draft) at an NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision, Football Championship Subdivision, Division II, Division III or an NAIA college or university;
  • Achieving a 3.2 cumulative grade point average throughout entire course of undergraduate study; and
  • Meeting all NCAA-mandated progress towards degree requirements.
