Simpson wins game one against Fitchburg State

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Simpson College baseball team opened day two in Florida with an 8-1 win over Fitchburg State, backed by strong pitching from Trey Castile and a trio of multi-hit games from Kasey Carter, Matthew Florence, and Dalton Ferrin.

Castile tallied 10 strikeouts and the Storm (4-7) outhit Fitchburg St. (4-5) by an 11-3 margin, including a 5-1 advantage in extra-base hits. The Falcons controlled game two of the doubleheader, racking up 15 hits en route to a 14-6 win.

Carter finished the doubleheader 4-for-5 with a double, a walk, two RBI, and five runs scored. Florence and Ian Baldwin added three hits apiece, while Sam Campin drove in a team-high three runs.

GAME ONE SUMMARY

  • The two teams traded a run in the opening inning, with Simpson's coming off a single through the left side by Will Carlock.
  • Simpson strung together four consecutive hits in the fourth to move ahead 5-1. Matthew Florence (triple) and Dalton Ferrin (double) highlighted the inning with a pair of extra-base hits.
  • Kasey Carter and Ian Baldwin added two more extra-base hits in the sixth as Simpson put up another crooked number, scoring three runs to push the lead to 8-1.
  • Trey Castile (2-2) contained the Falcons to just one run on two hits and three walks while notching his first double-digit strikeout performance of the season. Drew Carlson added three strikeouts in the ninth.

  • The Falcons scored one in the first, but Simpson responded with a two-run home run by Trenten Kingrey for a 2-1 lead.
  • Fitchburg St. ran away in the third, scoring seven runs on seven hits.
  • The Storm used a wild pitch and a two-run single by Sam Campin to cut the lead to 8-5, but the Falcons distanced themselves again with a four-run fifth.
  • Ian Baldwin plated Simpson's final run of the day with a base hit up the middle in the sixth.
