Monmouth takes doubleheader from Storm

MONMOUTH, Ill. -- The Simpson baseball team dropped both halves of its doubleheader at Monmouth on Sunday, losing game one 9-5 before dropping the nightcap 14-6.

The Storm (1-10) led 2-0 after the third inning in game one and held a 4-3 lead in the fifth in game two. Scott Meier and Nathan Carlin led Simpson with five hits apiece while Carlin and Truman Schmitt homered on the day.

Game 1: Monmouth 9, Simpson 5
Carlin hit a two-run homer to right with two outs in the sixth to give the Storm a 4-3 lead. But Mike Dato drove in the go-ahead run on a single in the home half and the Scots (8-5-1) led the rest of the way, adding three insurance runs in the eighth.

Carlin, Jared Herzog and Noah Sacco had two hits apiece. Tanner Jansen gave up three runs -- no earned -- off three hits in 3 1/3 innings in the start. Trey Kehoe suffered the loss, allowing six runs -- four earned -- off 10 hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Game 2: Monmouth 14, Simpson 6
The Scots plated 10 runs in the fifth inning to put the game out of reach, getting a grand slam from Campbell Quik in the process. Simpson led 4-2 in the fourth when Sacco roped a two-out, two-RBI double. Monmouth cut the lead to one with a run in the home half before the big fifth inning.

Meier went 4-for-4 at the plate, Hunter Hillygus went 4-for-5 and Schmitt hit a solo homer in the seventh. Curt Castenson gave up four runs -- three earned -- off four hits in four innings in the no-decision on the hill. J Lowery took the loss.
