Storm earn first win in doubleheader split with Marian

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Following a string of one-run losses to start the season, the Simpson baseball team earned a convincing 20-6 win over Marian (Wis.) in game one of a doubleheader Friday at the Tucson Invitational Games. Marian came back to take the nightcap 5-2.

Freshman third baseman Brandon Urias went 3-for-5 with five RBIs, Tanner Jansen got the win on the hill and drove in four on a home run and a double as the Storm came back from an early deficit to roll past the Sabres in game one. Simpson trailed 5-4 in the second before plating four in the third to go ahead for good.

Nathan Carlin drove in the game-tying run on a single and a sacrifice fly put by Urias put Simpson ahead 6-5. Jansen helped his own cause with a two-run shot to right center to make it 7-5. Marian got one back in the home half but Jansen's two-run double in the fourth made it 10-6 and it was all Simpson the rest of the way.

Urias, Noah Sacco and Hunter Hillygus had three hits apiece. Jansen allowed six runs off nine hits with six strikeouts in four innings to get the win in the circle.

Marian 5, Simpson 2
The Storm tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the first inning but scattered five hits in the final six innings of the three-run loss. Truman Schmitt drove in the first run on a single and Trey Kehoe brought in Hillygus on a sacrifice fly.

Nick Dugandzic drove in the game-winning run on an RBI single in the third and the Sabres tacked on insurance runs in the fourth and sixth. Schmitt and Kehoe had two hits apiece and Curt Castenson allowed five runs -- four earned -- off nine hits in 6 1/3 innings in the loss.
